Learning Continuously and Pursuing Cutting-Edge Innovations in Intelligent Driving Technology

Currently serving as a middleware software architect of the Cross-Domain Computing Solutions division of Bosch, I am responsible for participating in the design and development of new parts within the team, contributing to discussions on supply chain-related design in external projects, and overseeing the development of the image transmission module.

I joined Bosch right after I graduated from university. There were multiple reasons why I chose Bosch. I was mostly drawn to Bosch for its global leadership position in technology. Additionally, several alumni also recommended Bosch to me, speaking highly of its superior working environment and generous benefits. In fact, my undergraduate major is vehicle engineering, which focuses more heavily on mechanics and electronics than on software. However, with industrial development and technological progress, Bosch's proportion of software applications in the field of intelligent driving has been increasing. I seized the opportunity of the company’s transformation and its abundant resources to learn on the job, and study middleware knowledge in my spare time. With my hard work, I have gained extensive experience and grown into the present me step by step.

Driven by my passion for staying at the forefront of technology, continuously challenging myself and constantly learning, I chose to explore the field of intelligent driving by joining WAVE 3, Bosch’s Advanced Intelligent Driving Solution project. One of my most fulfilling tasks in this industry was the participation in the building of the WAVE 3 middleware team from scratch. From initial joint development with the German team to tailoring products to specific local needs and characteristics, we gradually grew into one team capable of handling innovation challenges and developing new features. Additionally, during the project, we encountered and solved problems together through constant debugging and optimization, ensuring delivery by key deadlines. It was a very fulfilling process for me.

Market Pressure and Innovation Drive in the Middleware Field

Due to Bosch's extensive experience and accumulated expertise in the mass production of embedded middleware, it is able to anticipate and cope with the challenges that may arise in the market application of embedded middleware, avoid some mistakes that may occur in the early stage, and take into account all of the unique needs for automated driving at the beginning of product design. Such experience accumulation and meticulous design process are unmatched by other startups. Nevertheless, many companies involved in intelligent driving are also pushing the boundaries of innovation. They have jointly created a unique market landscape in China that is highly competitive and rapidly evolving. Bosch is keeping up with or even surpassing its competitors in the industry through the mass production of some of its successful projects.

In addition to the pressure from market competition and quick delivery, we also face a series of other challenges, including improving initial projects, increasing software maturity and fixing bugs that arise when technology is applied in the embedded field for the first time. In the face of these goals, our team has strong cohesion and driving force. Sharing the same goals, we don’t give up easily even in the face of technical obstacles. That’s why we can still complete our R&D tasks and deliver high-quality results even within tight deadlines.

Innovation is at the core of our entire middleware development process, whether we are localizing a product for the Chinese market or developing new features from scratch. We strive to understand the differences between current middleware designs on the automated driving market and our existing designs, in order to make necessary adjustments and achieve mass production as soon as possible without compromising our long-term strategic plans. Based on the Nvidia Orin platform, we have developed a hardware accelerator adaptation layer to help perception algorithms acquire image data stably. In addition, we have locally developed the Forensic Recompute Player, which can perfectly recreate real-world vehicle issues in a simulated environment by analyzing recorded data. It’s a powerful tool to help developers quickly locate and solve problems. Furthermore, we have enhanced the functional safety of the AOS (Automotive Operating System) native communication middleware, elevating it from QM to ASIL B. These are milestone projects on our path to innovation, and through them, we have made our own contributions to empowering the development of intelligent driving.

Continuously Exploiting China's Market - Our Top Priority

I have been working for Bosch for six years, and during this time, I have grown from a novice in mechanics to a skilled software engineer who can handle the entire software lifecycle from design to development and verification. I personally think that working on complex problems and finding solutions are a very rewarding process. As a technology enthusiast, I believe that the developer role is ideal for continuous learning, constant knowledge updates, and growth. Continuing in my role, I hope to keep learning and developing new skills, delve deeper into the middleware field, gain a better understanding of upstream and downstream modules, and seize any opportunity to enhance my analytical and design skills. The middleware field is always open to talented people with clear logical minds, patience, and a strong desire to learn. Of course, basic software knowledge is also a must.

Our top priority is to introduce the Bosch AOS (Automotive Operating System) automated driving platform to the market, find favor with more customers, enrich the middleware ecosystem, and empower the closed-loop development of intelligent driving systems. In addition, I hope that Bosch will continue to develop more one-stop automated driving system solutions that cater to the unique needs of users on China’s market and offer superior product experiences to users.
