Exploring Diverse Fields to Determine Career Direction: My Transformation Journey in the JMP Program at Bosch

At present, I primarily serve Bosch as Supply Chain I4.0 BD Manager and Carbon Neutrality Program Manager. The concept of global lighthouse manufacturers at Bosch goes beyond the realm of production; it encompasses personnel, supply chains, and our environment too. That’s why carbon neutrality plays a vital role in our entire manufacturing system. Furthermore, our goal of promoting carbon neutrality is not only to achieve it ourselves but also to inspire our customers and suppliers to embrace the concepts and ideas that carbon neutrality entails via digital means, just as we do at Bosch. We aim to leverage this topic to drive the industry towards high-quality, low-carbon and digitally empowered development.

Before joining Bosch, I had actually majored in mechanical engineering and worked as a quality engineer in France after graduation. A year after I started working, I developed the idea of transitioning from a technical role to a business role. Coincidentally, I came across the opportunity to explore different roles through the JMP program at Bosch, and it resonated with me immediately. After a successful interview, I embarked on a two-year rotation journey.

Yin Lei

The Bosch JMP (Bosch Junior Managers Program) is, in simple terms, a talent program aimed at attracting and nurturing senior leaders. The program offers a two-year rotation experience that allows us to explore various fields without committing to a specific career path. It encourages us to try and experience as many different areas of work as possible before deciding on the most suitable direction. I chose Bosch JMP for two reasons: first of all, the program provides more options and opportunities, and secondly, it offers a lot of flexibility, allowing me to make contributions to different organizations while facilitating rapid learning and transformation. I really appreciate the pace of this program. It allows me to take on new tasks and combat new challenges every few months.

Initially, I started in procurement, but after multiple rotations, I discovered a stronger passion for business development. As a result, for my final rotation, I chose to be a Key Account Manager. After two years of development, I am pleased to see that I have successfully completed the planned transformation from a technical to a business role. Looking back, I attribute this transition to the nurturing environment of the JMP program, which provided me with ample opportunities to experience a wide range of professional roles. From an engineer to procurement and finally to business development, step by step, I am getting closer to the career that I’ve been dreaming of.

From Market Research to Capability Development: Building a Local Carbon Neutrality Business from the Ground Up

I am currently working for Bosch Connected Industry (BCI), the division responsible for promoting Bosch's carbon neutrality business. At BCI, we actively implement the dual strategy of being both a leading user and a leading provider and integrate Bosch's carbon neutrality toolbox with practices of manufacturing plants for systematic output of carbon neutrality. We follow a systematic approach that includes assessing current carbon emissions, analyzing carbon reduction potential, planning carbon neutrality pathways, and implementing carbon neutrality solutions. Through these steps, we provide external clients with carbon neutrality planning, consulting, implementation, and support services.

Yin Lei

I believe the BCI team resembles a start-up organization. Here, your background is not the most important factor; what matters is whether you possess the spirit of innovation and can grow alongside the team. It's about whether you have the courage to create something from scratch, embrace challenges or failures, and continuously adjust and try again. Taking carbon neutrality as an example, we started from ground zero, conducting market research in the early stages and later shifting our focus on capability development. This includes internal and external training, as well as interviews with the factories of Bosch around the world. Additionally, our digital products, such as our Smart Home Energy Management System, are also continuing to evolve in response to market demands.

From our first project to the present, our Chinese team has become capable of independently delivering end-to-end solutions. Due to our ability to address customers' end-to-end needs, we are gradually taking on more customers and working on even more projects. I feel a great sense of fulfilment and pride in our team for these accomplishments.

Diverse Data and Experience Support: Bosch Continues to Lead in the Era of Industry 4.0 and Carbon Neutrality

Ever since China introduced the “3060” dual-carbon goal, the automotive industry, as a crucial player in the ecosystem, has responded actively, formulating specific implementation plans centered around technological innovation and energy consumption structure. In 2020, Bosch Group achieved this goal in its research, development, and manufacturing operations, becoming the first large-scale industrial company to do so worldwide. This accomplishment stemmed from Bosch's unwavering commitment to sustainable development, which is an integral part of our corporate strategy. To achieve carbon neutrality in steps progressively, Bosch employed four measures, including enhancing energy efficiency, establishing renewable energy sources, procuring green electricity, and offsetting carbon emissions. These effective measures have enabled us to reach two critical milestones in our carbon neutrality journey: neutralizing direct emissions (Scope 1) and indirect emissions related to energy procurement (Scope 2).

As the world's first major manufacturing company to achieve carbon neutrality and one of the initiators of Industry 4.0, Bosch is at the forefront of digital transformation, carbon neutrality, and carbon reduction in the supply chain. With ample experience under our belt, we are able to provide comprehensive solutions to other companies. Moving forward, we aim to leverage Bosch's position as a chain master and the positive effects it brings to drive sustainable development across the entire value chain.

Yin Lei

Why are we also striving for carbon neutrality among downstream suppliers? On one hand, as the master in the supply chain, Bosch shoulders the social responsibility from an environmental standpoint to demand energy conservation and emissions reduction from our suppliers. We hope that our supply chain partners will join us in contributing to a greener future for our planet. From the perspective of being responsible to our customers, Bosch goes beyond focusing solely on its own production emissions and aims for a low-carbon journey for our products "from cradle to customer's door."

Furthermore, we also aspire to help other companies manage their production in a leaner and more efficient manner by providing digital transformation solutions. Leaner processes result in reduced carbon emissions during the production of a product and significant cost savings for the company. However, we are not simply solution providers. Leveraging my previous experience in procurement, I have a clear understanding of the current degree of digitalization, pain points, and demands of various suppliers and a majority of small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in China. Tailoring our services based on their specific needs, we provide customized consulting services in the initial stages and support our clients throughout the implementation process, offering long-term value through Bosch's methodologies and products. This includes process improvements, training for relevant personnel, and system development, which we solidify digitally to ensure long-lasting benefits for our clients. And that is essentially our competitive advantage.

Yin Lei

On the other hand, Bosch has gained extensive experience in carbon neutrality globally, and we are committed to sharing this expertise to help China's manufacturing industry achieve energy conservation and emissions reduction. In this regard, we strive to provide market education on carbon neutrality in a more flexible manner. For example, when conducting training sessions, we don't simply give lectures to companies. Instead, we utilize interactive simulations to help them experience that carbon reduction or carbon neutrality is not just a "concept" but something that brings actual tangible benefits to their businesses. By doing that, we can change their mindset and help them understand how Bosch managed to translates this idea into practice. More importantly, this approach triggers thoughts among company managers and inspires them to continuously invest in this area, realizing long-term value.

Looking back on my journey, I feel extremely grateful for every career opportunity I have had at Bosch. I can clearly see how I have been growing and evolving into a better version of myself. At the same time, I have a lot of faith in myself and my team. I believe we can navigate the path of carbon neutrality and contribute to Bosch's sustainable development.
